Issue 22 | Our Picks

Aika

We love the versatility of the Aika lace pullover by Megumi Shinagawa! It's elegant and has a relaxed fit you can wear for any occasion through the changing seasons.

It's knitted from the top down and combines traditional patterns with Megumi's creation. The neckband, hem and cuffs feature spiral ribbing.

The pattern recommends a fluffy 4ply/fingering alpaca/merino/wool blend, and some great options are two strands held together in either Lana Grossa Setasuri (I know, we can't stop talking about it!), Rowan Kidsilk Haze, or Sesia Vivienne. These will all give you a lightweight, lofty fabric with a soft haze like the original design.

If you love the lacey design but would prefer it without the fluff, you could opt for Alpaca Yarns Sox, Yarnfloozy Sage, or Malabrigo Mechita.

Stripes not Stripes

A classic striped sweater with a twist. Maria Gomes was inspired by the beach and sea of the north of Portugal when designing this playful sweater.

It uses a unique slip-stitch pattern creating an interesting texture and a fun rythm to memorise. It's knit using only one colour at a a time and Maria recommends carrying the yarns along using the twist method to sew in fewer ends.

You'll need five colours of 4ply/fingering yarn. Sesia Mistral and Rosarios4 Meia both have a large range of solid shades to mix and match together; a yak blend such as Yarnfloozy Machinist or Happy Go Knitty Mardi would be similar to the yarn alternatives reccomended by the designer.

You could even opt for something with a lovely possum halo such as Zealana Rimu 4ply or Yarnfloozy Brushtail 4ply.

Bokeh

Another great knit for the change of season! The lovely Bokeh is a light openwork shawl to accompany you on crisp spring days. The shawl is worked bottom up with perfectly constructed borders to fit the lacework.

The recommended yarn for the pattern is 100% Merino wool 8ply/DK to give you high stitch definition and make the lacework look impeccable.

We can just imagine this shawl looking amazing in Malabrigo Rios, KiwiYarn-A Merino DK, Yarnfloozy Staunch, or Broadway Hand Dyed Merinob, which all come in rich multidimensional colours.

For a more solid coloured shawl, Ashley Merino 8ply, Woolly 8ply, Amano Puna 100% alpaca would all be lovely options.

Luumu

Gudrun Johnston's simple yet chic cardigan was designed to be practical and beautiful. Something you'll want to wear day in day out. It even has optional pockets!

Worked from the bottom up using seamless saddle-shoulder construction, this pattern may look simple but it's fun to knit. It combines a 4ply/fingering and 2ply/laceweight yarn to get extra texture.

The pattern recommends using a good woolly wool to keep it light and structured. Wild Earth's woollen-spun Aspen 4ply, Yarnfloozy Homegrown untreated merino, or BC Garn Bio Balance wool/cotton blend would be great option for your base yarn.

For the laceweight, you can have fun colour-matching (or add a whole new colour to complement your base) with our huge range of Rowan Kidsilk Haze Mohair, Sesia Vivienne Silk Mohair or Lana Grossa Setasuri.
